Every spring, the Helen Creighton Folklore Society (HCFS) offers small monetary awards to winners of specific folk music and speech classes in provincial music festivals in Nova Scotia, and also to the provincial music festivals in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. To qualify, students must perform a piece from the Helen Creighton collection.
In 2026, fewer students than last year competed for prizes using Creighton-collected songs, despite the continued availability of our Traditional Folk Songs songbook. Nevertheless, we were pleased to offer $50 prizes to students from the Lunenburg County Music Festival, the New Glasgow Music Festival, and the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival in Halifax. In alphabetic order, they were: Sofia Andreu, Keighley Brooker, Maria Lochhead, Eva MacFarlane, Wavey Middleton, and Felicity Risser. We congratulate them, and wish them continued success.
